Brothers and Sisters.
There's much to be said about last night and
its implications going forward into
the 2008 election, but none more important
than this: union turnout in the
Democratic primaries was astonishing. We hit
numbers as high as 40% of the total
vote in New York and 52% of the total vote
in Michigan! Attached is a
spreadsheet that breaks down the numbers in
each state. Needless to say, this
bodes well for the Labor 2008 program. Union
members are tuned in and know how
high the stakes will be.
And while the race on the Democratic side is
still very competitive, Republicans
have all but assured Sen. McCain's path to
the nomination. What would a McCain
presidency mean? It would mean continued
support for unfair trade deals like
NAFTA. It would mean continued opposition to
universal health care for all
Americans. It would mean a continuation of
economic policies that are tilted
toward the privileged at the expense of
workers.
And it means that the Labor Movement will be
working overtime to make sure
America's working families know that Sen.
McCain is no friend of theirs.
We will soon be releasing a research
document highlighting all of Sen. McCain's
misguided positions on issues crucial to the
working families across America.
Additionally, we will be doing a McCain
focus group of union members in Ohio
this weekend. The focus group will be
webcast, and you will all get a chance to
see it. I will send out information on how
to log in in a future email
In Solidarity,
Karen Ackerman
ASK-A-LAWYER
What workers don't know can get them fired, but Working America is helping to change that.
Our "Ask-a-Lawyer" service (www.workingamerica.org/askalawyer) offers workers a way to find out what protections they have in the workplace. Over 500 people so far have written in with their questions about work, which are answered each weekday by one of over 25 volunteer members of the AFL-CIO Lawyers Coordinating Committee (LCC).
Ask-a-Lawyer has been featured by workplace lawyers and columnists across the country, including the Washington Post, New York Newsday, Kansas City Star, Indianapolis Star, and The Oregonian
This summer, we will have ten canvass offices open in eight states, with our latest offices to open including Louisville, Kentucky; Manchester, New Hampshire, and Portland, Maine.
Working America members sent over 17,000 postcards to their members of Congress in support of the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA).
